The inspiration for this song came while watching the events of 9-11 on TV. How horrifying it was. I was on the phone with my dad when the second tower came down. We were both in disbelief - was this the news or a movie? I was instantly filled with fear because I knew there would be retaliation, more destruction, more devastation and more war. I was so scared for my children, and I was especially scared for the children and families who would be directly affected.

For me, world war was a thing of the past - nearly forgotten. It was then that my dad reminded me of our family’s history with war. My grandpa served in the Canadian Army during the Second World War and was gone from his family for four years. My dad never knew my grandpa until he was five years old. I had known this for a long time but never understood the impact of that separation until 9-11. What happened that day meant that more children and parents would be separated from each other because of war. After several more conversations with my dad about his memories of the day he met his dad, I came up with this song. It’s written from a little boy’s point of view, and is what I think my dad might have felt on the day his father finally came home.

The song seemed to resonate with audiences and, with the artwork of my beautifully talented friend, Megan, evolved into this book.

Release Date: September 29, 2006

The inspiration for this song came on my youngest daughter's first day of school. She wanted to ride the bus that morning, so I followed her to school and watched and waved as she went in when the bell rang. She skipped away and it was me who didn't want to let go.

As the mother of three girls, I'd been looking forward to having some time to myself again, but i ended up being the last parent in the schoolyard, waiting just in case she needed me. I peeked through her classroom window to see if she was okay. Where did the time go? How did she get so big?

I lingered in the playground by myself for a while, crying softly, hoping I'd given my children the nurturing and the freedom, the roots and the wings, to become the people they were meant to be. When I got home, I wrote the song "Linger" and added it to my performances. It seemed to resonate with audiences and, with the addition of the amazing talents of my friend and fellow mother, Megan Mansbridge, has evolved from a song into this book.

"...The moment is bittersweet when a child finds her wings..."
