Influenced by the music of such music legends as
Patsy Cline, Etta James, Peggy Lee and Hank Williams, award-winning
singer/songwriter Marny Duncan-Cary serves up jazz-and-blues tinged
country in a strong, clear voice. With songs ranging from down-to-earth
to emotionally charged and energetic, Marny’s performances
are charismatic, drawing audiences in and creating the kinds of
moments that make you smile long after the show has ended.
Marny showcased at the 2003 Canadian Country Music
Awards and was part of the prestigious Songwriter’s Café
at the 2004 CCMAs. Her critically acclaimed debut CD, Reason
for Bein’, was nominated in five categories
and resulted in four awards at the 2005 Saskatchewan Country Music
Awards. These included Album of the Year, Female Vocalist of the
Year, Composer of the Year (for “Because I Want To”)
and Rising Star. Marny was again nominated for Female Vocalist of
the Year in 2006 and 2007.
She was honoured to have “Who’s That
Man?” - a song inspired by her family’s history with
World War II - included in CBC national radio’s 2004 Remembrance
Day Special. This song, along with “Linger” (both from
Reason for Bein’), was used in an episode of the
hit CTV comedy Corner Gas. Marny was delighted to perform
for Queen Elizabeth during her visit to Saskatchewan in 2005, and
that fall was also selected to perform at the Saskatchewan Centennial
celebrations held in Ottawa. The summer of 2009 saw her on stage
in the Western Canadian debut of “Canada’s Songbird:
A Musical Tribute to Anne Murray,” a musical theatre production.
As an extension of her songwriting, Marny has published
two children’s picture books based on her songs. Set in the
fall colours of the Qu’appelle Valley, Linger
shares a mother’s bittersweet feelings of
loss and pride on her child’s first day of school. Linger
was extremely well-received and earned a glowing review from CBC’s
national radio program “Freestyle.”
Marny’s second book, Who’s
That Man?, captures the poignant first moment of
meeting between a father and son separated by war. Who’s That
Man? will launch in November 2009. Plans are already in place to
continue the storytelling with a picture book based on her song
“I Wanna Be A Rockstar,” a fun and funky track from
Reason for Bein’ set to hit the shelves in 2010.
Marny loves every minute of performing with her
daughter and fellow singer, Mae Cary, and is always glad for the
opportunity to speak at schools, libraries and teachers' conventions.
